Picky Eating and Balanced Nutrition

Picky eating is common, but persistent restriction, mealtime distress or poor growth may deserve a more structured review.

Start with the child’s overall condition

Parents often focus on one symptom, but the most useful clues may be breathing, hydration, energy, sleep, appetite, pain, school attendance and whether the child is behaving like themselves. Age matters because babies and young children cannot always describe what they feel.

Keep a simple timeline

Write down when the concern began, what has changed, whether symptoms are constant or intermittent, and what has helped or made things worse. Include medicines, food, sleep, activity and any recent infection or travel when relevant.

Use home monitoring carefully

Home observations can be helpful, but they should not create false reassurance. If the child is worsening or you are concerned about breathing, hydration, alertness or severe pain, seek medical assessment rather than continuing to monitor indefinitely.

Questions to ask at an appointment

  • What are the most likely causes?
  • What can we safely do at home?
  • How long should improvement take?
  • What warning signs matter?
  • When should we return for review?
